In the past, the understanding was that Lyme disease was only transferred by ticks, however, transmission methods are more numerous. Knowledge is power. Finding out our risks and increasing our awareness is the first step to resisting Lyme Disease. Lyme expert Theresa Dale, Ph.D., CCN,, ND, spoke on Lyme Disease Protocol Using Homeopathy and Functional Medicine at the American Naturopathic Medical Association Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 24th, 2018. She said the information on Lyme and Lyme transmission is eye opening. Still about 50 percent of people who have Lyme do not test positive on a blood test. Like testing for thyroid issues, symptoms still remain the best guide.
In the natural health practices world, this is common knowledge.
The most common times to acquire Lyme is in the Spring and Fall, when ticks are breeding and preparing for hibernation. Cold temperatures do not kill of ticks, as evidenced to the most populated areas of ticks and the outbreak of Lyme in Lyme, Connecticut, a region that gets very cold and covered in snow in the winter.
The methods in which we acquire Lyme are not only numerous, they are growing. The base foundation for resistance to Lyme is a healthy, balanced microbiome, one that is so healthy that it appropriately makes ALA, Alpha Lipoic Acid, to extract heavy metals from the body. Eating a diet rich in real nutrient dense foods, with the addition of many probiotic based foods is key. Be aware of these most recently alarming transmission methods to best protect your family.
Mosquitoes- Lyme Epidemie says, “It’s spread by mosquitoes. Who hasn’t had a mosquito bite? We tested mosquitoes in Michigan and sure enough some of them carried the Lyme spirochete.”
Bed Bugs- Dr. Dale says beg bugs have been traced back to spreading Lyme even though bed bugs are publicly credited with being disease free. The NIH and many pest control companies repeat bed bugs do not transfer disease.
Non flying insects – Two people traveling to the forested area of Mexico City, ages 9 and 34 received borrelial lymphocytoma lesions from a nonflying insect. Emerging Infectious Diseases reported the people had not traveled anywhere else, had bite lesions from the cheek and ear, the lesions tested positive for Lyme.
Pregnancy – Lyme during pregnancy is classified as Gestational Lyme. Some practitioners say the person who gets Gestational Lyme have had Lyme but it was dormant and surfaced during pregnancy. When studying cases Rheumatic Diseases Clinics of North America says, “Autopsy and clinical studies have associated gestational Lyme borreliosis with various medical problems including fetal death, hydrocephalus, cardiovascular anomalies, neonatal respiratory distress, hyperbilirubinemia, intrauterine growth retardation, cortical blindness, sudden infant death syndrome, and maternal toxemia of pregnancy.”
Birth – A recorded 240 people have gotten Lyme Disease from birth. It is unknown in all cases if the mothers had Lyme, dormant Lyme or no Lyme at all. Fever and lethargy are prominent symptoms. Obstetrics and Gynecology says, “Although the neonatal outcome in such infections historically is poor, the infants of these mothers survived. It is suggested that special diagnostic procedures, timely administration of parenteral antibiotics, and vigilant antepartum testing be considered in all similar pregnant patients.”
Breastfeeding – Twelve people have caught Lyme Disease while nursing from a mother who is infected with Lyme.
Sweat, urine, hands, tears and semen – Lida H. Mattmann, author of Cell Wall Deficient Forms: Stealth Pathogens says, “We know now it’s in tears, and people wipe their eyes and we shake hands with them.”
Fleas – Sam Rahbar, MD, FACP, ABIHM, says he see fleas are much more prevalent for transmitting Lyme than ticks.
Mice, snakes, rats and other pest are known to carry tics, tucked on their bodies in hair or scales.
