Having chickens is probably the best defense system for removing ticks from the property. Chicken and guinea hens eat ticks at an astounding rate. Every house should have a chicken or two, home owners association or not. In fact, just encouraging homeowners to take charge of their own food supply, by having a chicken for each person in the household, like they did in the ’40s, would greatly reduce, if not eliminate the Lyme disease issue. Roosters are not necessary for tick removal or egg production, only hens are needed. According to Joel Salatin, chickens are the best pet. Chicken diapers can be worn so the bird can stay in the house. Chickens are extremely lovable and personable animals, some say they rank just below a dog, right above a cat.
