Often times when a person switches from a Standard American Diet, to a healthful diet of no sugars, starches or grains, cravings and withdrawals appear. Sugars, starches and grains often feed yeasts, which when not fed, get angry and exhale toxic gasses. Candida albicans, one of 250 yeasts in the body, exhales 176 toxic gasses such as methane gas, ethanol, hydrogen gas, ammonia, acetone, and more. These toxic gasses have been classified as going from the intestinal tract, through the vagus nerve to the opiate receptors of the brain, causing the desire for the foods which feed the yeast. These folks are classified as responding like drug addicts for sugars, grains and starches which feed the starving yeasts. Click here to read more.
Current Opinion in Microbiology says, “Animal models argue that Candida colonization delays healing of inflammatory lesions and that inflammation promotes colonization. These effects may create a vicious cycle in which low-level inflammation promotes fungal colonization and fungal colonization promotes further inflammation. Both inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal Candida colonization are associated with elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-17.”
Gut Pathogens says those with deeper damage in the microbiome, as in those with Celiac, have excessively higher yeast counts.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition made it clear in a study analyzing the use of saturated fat and heart disease. They found, “A meta-analysis of prospective epidemiologic studies showed that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease or cardio vascular disease.”
Dr. Natasha says in GAPS FAQS, “Cravings for sweet things and chocolate are due to unstable blood sugar level. In order to remove your sugar cravings you need to keep your blood sugar at a steady level. Here is what we do: make a butter / honey mixture or a coconut oil / honey mixture, put it in a glass jar and carry that jar with you everywhere. Eat 2-3 tablespoons of this mixture every 15-25 minutes all day long. Do this for a month or longer depending on the severity of your sugar cravings; in the meantime focus on implementing the GAPS diet, which will normalise your blood sugar permanently. Once your blood sugar is normal, you cravings will be gone and at that stage you can stop carrying a jar of butter / honey mixture with you.”
To make the honey butter mixture, blend together in a mixer, on high, one cup of grass fed butter (200-400 grams) and one to three tablespoons local honey. The mixture can be made with coconut oil if butter isn’t desired or tolerated.
Beating the mixture for about 20 minutes, scraping down the sides to incorporate, makes a fluffy frosting like mixture.
The longer you beat the mixture, the more fluffy it becomes.
It can be stored in small glass jars and taken with you through the day. Dr. Natasha further says, “When sugar cravings are gone, you will be able to maintain your blood sugar normal between meals without having to eat anything.”
