“Eating specific foods that make your body more alkaline can protect against (illnesses) as well as shed pounds,” says WebMD. They further say, “The alkaline diet claims to help your body maintain its blood pH level. In fact, nothing you eat is going to substantially change the pH of your blood. Your body works to keep that level constant.”
However, people who are sick have pH levels that are outside the normal range. This can be fixed through nutrient dense foods.
Cancer Fighting Strategies says, “Cancer thrives in an acidic environment, and doesn’t survive in a normal, more alkaline environment. Cancer cells make your body even more acidic as they produce lactic acid. So if you have cancer, your pH levels are low and your body is too acidic.”
Dr. Josh Axe, author of The Real Food Diet says, “All diseases including infections, osteoporosis and cancer thrive in an acidic environment. By alkalizing your body your cells can heal and regenerate at the highest level.” He says an average pH level of 7.36 is optimum and food can increase or lower that level. “A can of soda literally has a pH of 2.5 and it would take approximately 30 glasses of water just to balance things out. Green vegetable juices like wheat grass and spinach help restore the body’s proper pH.”
The Wall Street Journal reported the advancement on technology in this area saying, “Smartphones will soon be able to function as a mobile, real-time resource for rapidly obtaining all the studies done currently in a medical laboratory, including chemistries, blood values and microbiological studies. A device worn on the wrist, called Visi, has been approved by the FDA for hospital use that can measure your heart’s electrical activity, respiratory rate, blood oxygen and blood pressure (without a cuff), and transmit the data wirelessly.”
These up-and-coming devices include testing pH levels. WSJ says, “An individual can feed a test strip into a device that—once connected to a smartphone equipped with an app—can carry out a complete urinalysis and instantly give the individual his or her specific gravity, pH, and levels of glucose, protein, red blood cells, white blood cells, bilirubin and nitrates.”
These devices will assist with those who are chronically ill, the specific individuals who benefit greatly from minor changes in food nourishment while at the same time they plummet greatly from food that isn’t nourishing. Individuals who have mild illness can benefit from simply sticking to nourishing foods, dropping processed foods. Those that have severe gut damage, however, need pinpointed specific repair from the most effective pH changing foods as well as specific probiotics (like this one or this one) to boost the system.
Normal blood levels should have a pH of 7, below 7 means your body is acidic, above 7 means you are alkaline. Changing the pH of your body can be assisted through eating alkaline or basic foods.

Alkaline forming foods: alfalfa, almonds, amaranth, apples, apple cider vinegar, apricots, artichokes, asparagus, avocado, banana, berries, bamboo shoots, beans (green, lima, string, wax), buttermilk (from raw milk, unpasteurized), beets, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chard, cherries, chestnuts, chicory, chives, collards, corn (sweet corn or popcorn), coconut (fresh, unsweetened), currants, cucumber, curly dock, dandelion, dill, dates, eggplant, garlic, horseradish, kale, kelp, kohlrabi, kumquat, lemon, limes, leeks, lettuce, mangoes, melons (of all kinds), milk (raw), millet, miso, molasses, okra, olives, olive oil, onions, oranges, parsley, parsnips, papaya, pears, pineapple, pomegranates, prickly pear, pumpkin, quinoa, radish, rhubarb, spices (fresh or dried if no other added ingredients), sauerkraut, sorrel, spinach, squash, strawberries, tangerine, tea (loose leaf or herbal, with no other added ingredients) tomato, turnips, watercress, whey, wine (preferably dry red), yogurt (made from raw milk, unpasteurized).
Acid forming foods: almond milk, amaranth, barley,black beans, blueberries, bread, cashews, cheese, chick peas, cranberries, corn, cornstarch, crackers, currants, green peas, flour, kamut, kidney beans, legumes, lentils, lives, oat bran, oatmeal, oats, peanuts, peanut butter, pecans, pinto beans, quinoa, red beans, rice, rye, spelt, plums, prunes, soy, tahini, walnuts, white beans, winter squash, wheat, wheat bran.
